Health Protection Agency HPA says 150 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the country on Sunday as the Maldives looks to overcome the latest COVID wave that wreaked havoc in the island nation.

The Agency said that yesterday only 30 cases were reported from the Greater Male' Area where the daily numbers had been above 1000 a month ago.

HPA also said that 101 new cases confirmed from inhabited islands while 17 new cases were reported from operational resorts and 2 more from safaris.

Saturday's cases take the total number of new cases reported in the Maldives to a staggering 73,094 since March 2020. HPA had confirmed 68,806 recoveries and had said that there are currently 4067 active cases of the pandemic in the country.

HPA added that 30 patients are currently hospitalized for further treatment.

The devastating pandemic has killed 209 people in the Maldives and 48 of those deaths have come this month.

Last month remains the month with the highest COVID fatalities since the pandemic hit the country's shores last year with 88 pandemic deaths reported in May.
