The Opposition coalition has joined calls demanding the resignation of Health Minister Ahmed Naseem after the death of a 10-year-old girl who succumbed to COVID-19 yesterday.

The girl's family had shared that they had waited almost three hours before an ambulance was deployed to their house in Male' and this, in turn, had prompted the Health Ministry to conduct a case review of the delay in deployment.

In a statement, the opposition coalition said that it cannot accept the loss of life caused by negligence on the part of the Health Ministry and those institutions under the ministry and said that the current administration had failed to control the COVID-19 pandemic.

It said that while the government had spent a staggering MVR 3.5 billion on COVID management but had failed to make a difference that would help the citizens in the last year.

The opposition lamented the death of the little girl and said that an apology from Health Minister Ahmed Naseem could not be enough and this too is unacceptable.

It called on the government to conduct a fair and just investigation into the events that led to the girl's death and to punish those responsible for the negligence.

The opposition's call came as many on social media platforms also called for the resignation of Health Minister Naseem amid the reports of negligence from Health Protection Agency HPA and IGMH.
