Government Ministers had lauded the newly unveiled reduced internet prices.
Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali said via Twitter that she was excited about this timely improvement in internet services.
She said that with these changes students can hopefully experience uninterrupted online classes and that teachers can better interact with the students.
The Education Minister said that she looked look forward to seeing the positive changes brought on by this initiative.
Meanwhile, Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail said that today’s announcement on internet pricing and speed takes into consideration immediate generous reduction of prices/ uninterrupted access to internet at reasonable speed.
The newly formed Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Communication said today at an event that said that the new prices would bring about a 30 to 28 percent price reduction to residential fixed broadband packages.
The Ministry said that the national minimum broadband speed had now been set at 2 Mbps. It also said that for fixed residential broadband packages above MVR 300, the minimum throttle speed should be set at 5 Mbps.
The Ministry noted that the minimum throttle speed for all fixed residential broadband packages should be set at 2 Mbps.
It said these changes would go into effect on July 1st.
Meanwhile, the Ministry said that a 20 percent increase in mobile broadband would be effective in July of this month and both the mobile networks would offer these increments.
