Police have arrested one of the main men suspected of spreading extremist ideologies in the Maldives on Wednesday
Police said a 49-year-old local man was arrested in the capital city of Male' last and that he is allegedly one of the main suspects behind the vast spread of extremist ideologies in the country.
Police did not reveal any other information regarding the latest arrest.
The new development came as Police looked to flush out more extremists living in the country after top brass at the force promised more action against radicals following the May 6th attack against the Speaker of the Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Speaking to the media after the attack earlier this month, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed had said that among the extremists currently living in the country, there are those radicals who would not hesitate to harm another or even take another's life for their own cause.
He had also said that Police are working endlessly to ensure that society is safeguarded from such individuals.
The Commissioner also said that in the last two years, Police had taken more action than ever before in relation to stopping terrorism and some crimes had been committed because of police intervention.
Hameed had urged all relevant authorities to work within the laws to prevent terrorism-related crimes and to further strengthen existing laws to bring individuals behind terrorist activities in front of justice.
