A recently married couple has been given a huge fine for disobeying quarantine rules in Gaa Alifu Atoll Villigilli.

Police said that two individuals who had gone to the island's court after disobeying quarantine rules were given a fine of MVR 20,000. Police added that the couple had gone to the court on the 11th and that the couple got married at the court.

Police had said that the individuals had been under quarantine on the island.

Authorities have been following strict rules against the COVID-19 pandemic that has been affecting the whole nation as the country battles its fourth pandemic wave.

Health experts have described the current wave as the most dangerous and infective wave yet with daily COVID numbers now hitting more than 1000 for several days.

Yesterday itself Health Protection Agency HPA had confirmed 1007 new cases of COVID-19 in the country and had said that nearly 200 cases were reported from the islands.

Authorities had banned non-essential traveling between the islands and had also said that all quarantine eases given to individuals with 2nd doses of vaccine had now been stopped.
