Police say they have decided to do an autopsy of the man who died yesterday while under police custody.
Reports have identified the deceased as 48-year-old Ahmed Afrah, who was arrested last Friday.
Police said Afrah, who is being held in cell No. 7 of Atollvehi, was found to have stopped moving at around 05:50 am yesterday. He was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.
Police cited the hospital to report that Afrah was declared dead on arrival.
The case is being investigated by the Major Crime Investigation Department.
Police said the incident has been reported to the Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC). The Professional Standards Command is conducting an internal investigation into the incident.
