President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has instructed the Attorney General of the Maldives to amend necessary laws to strengthen the security and protection provided to the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief Justice of the Maldives
This includes designating the Speaker and Chief Justice their official residences.
President Solih tasked the Attorney General to make necessary amendments to the laws to strengthen the security and protection of the Speaker and the Chief Justice.
The President also briefed the Cabinet on this matter during yesterday’s online cabinet session.
The President's order followed last week's assassination attempt against the speaker of the parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed just outside his residence.
Assailants had placed an explosive device on a motorcycle parked on the narrow road where the speaker's house was located and had moved to detonate the device just as the speaker had neared the vehicle to get into his car nearby.
The speaker and former President Nasheed had sustained serious injuries in the attack against his person with his medical team revealing that projectiles from the blast had pierced his lungs after fracturing through his fourth rib, narrowly missing his heart by a centimeter.
Five others were also injured in the attack including members of his security detail.
Police have so far arrested 3 individuals in relation to the attack including the prime suspect who had detonated the explosive device near the scene of the attack.
