Speaker of the parliament Mohamed Nasheed says probing the MMPRC scam might cost some of the current MPs their seat as he issued a stark warning over the extent of the greatest scandal the country has seen.

Speaking at today's parliamentary sitting, Nasheed said that no aspects of the MMPRC scandal can be swept under the carpet while he remained as the Speaker of the parliament.

He said that he will spearhead the investigation into any MP or state figure regardless of their stature if they are accused of having any connection with the scandal.

Nasheed said that the current parliament would also support him in such an investigation.

The Speaker further said that he had shared enough evidence about the scam with the government and that it outlines how MVR 70 million were distributed among MPs, cabinet members, and other government officials.

Investigations into the scam have shown that more than 335 people including former and current MPs, high-ranking security officials, politicians, and civilians have received bribes under the scandal.

Reports from Police and the asset recovery commission had said that 267 people have directly benefitted from the MMPRC scandal and that these include 44 former MPs, 16 current MPs, officials from independent institutions, officials from the current as well as the former administration, judges, and security officials.
