Speaker of the parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed says he would assist MPs who want to travel to the Atolls to campaign for the upcoming local council elections.
Speaking during the debate on the emergency motion submitted today calling for equal campaigning opportunities, Nasheed said that MPs who wish to travel to their constituencies for campaigning can request his assistance and that he would assist them in their travels.
Nasheed said members of the parliament should be given the opportunity to campaign for their respective political parties for the upcoming local council elections.
Nasheed added that he would seek the appropriate clearances for the MPs' travels once they request his assistance.
MP for Maavashu Constituency and former Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed had today submitted an emergency motion to the Parliament calling for equal opportunities to campaign for the upcoming Local Council Elections.
Speaking at the parliamentary sitting today, MP Saeed noted that government Ministers, MP's belonging to the ruling government as well as officials of state-owned companies are taking unfair political advantages afforded to them through the guidelines set by the Health Protection Agency HPA.
He said such officials are traveling to the islands without having to quarantine and that this can be seen as the government exerting its influence on the upcoming elections.
MP Saeed called for equal opportunities to campaign as guaranteed by the Constitution and said that all the political parties competing in the elections must be given this opportunity.
