Several MPs representing MDP in the parliament have called for action against the former Home Minister Umar Naseer after he had leaked a document that he had said was the Uthurufalhu Agreement between India and the Maldives.
The parliament today debated on an emergency motion that called for action against those who had leaked the document that had gone viral yesterday.
Speaking during the debate MP for Bilehdhoo constituency Ahmed Haleem said that making everything political is not the right thing to do.
He said that individuals cannot leak fake documents and jeopardize the peace within the community and called on the government to take action against the former Home Minister.
Speaking during the same debate, MP for Mulaku Constituency Ibrahim Naseer said that Umar Naseer had previously called for the fall of Maldivian security services and had worked to achieve this. He added that such a person should not be allowed to remain free within the society.
MP Naseer also said that the leaked documents were an agreement written during the administration of former President Abdullah Yameen.
Yesterday, Defense Ministry had issued a statement saying that the leaked documents about the UTF agreement were fake.
The Ministry urged all to be mindful of safeguarding national security and the interest of the country's people when disseminating information and to also be considerate of the relationships between the Maldives and other countries.
It also urged against spreading false information that jeopardizes the unity and harmony within the country and called all to act to protect these aspects.
The Defence Ministry ended the curt statement by saying that the Maldives National Defense Force MNDF would not allow any party to harm the national security and sovereignty of the country.
The agreement now labeled as 'fake' by the government gives unhindered access to the UTF for the personnel of the government of India or of its contractors positioned for design, construction, development of facilities; the management, administration, and maintenance of such Facilities as well providing training as provided for under the agreement
