Education Ministry has made a major change to the start of the academic year by moving the beginning of each school year to August, starting this year.

Speaking at a news conference held today, Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali said that the Ministry is always working to make decisions that benefit the students of the country and that this change would bring many advantages to the students.

She said that this would give the students to take part in different international programs and competitions while also giving the students to get work experience from different industries in the country.

The Ministry had said that with this change, the school holiday break would now fall at the end of June or the beginning of July.

Speaking at the press today, Deputy Minister Ahmed Mujahid said that the change was brought about after having discussions with many parties.

He said that this includes many who are working in the education sector and many who have a stake in the sector.

Mujahid said almost all of those who took part in the discussion supported the change and the survey done in preparation for the change also showed that the majority of those who took the survey supported moving the academic year to August.

The on-going COVID-19 pandemic had interrupted the current academic year last year and the Ministry had to abandoned most of the year to fight the pandemic.

Schools across the nation started the second term of the academic year in January this year but again the schools in the Greater Male' Area have been closed down with the increase in COVID-19 cases.
