Parliament's Committee on National Security Services has given its approval to appoint former MP and MDP International Spokesperson Hamid Abdul Ghafoor to the Police Board.
The committee dubbed the 214 COmmittee met today and deliberated on the applications of candidates for police board as the member of the general public.
Out of the 5 names forwarded to the Committee, it had picked Hamid's name unanimously for the police board.
As per the newly enacted Police bill, the two members from the general public who sit on the Police Board must be picked by the Parliament majority.
The MDP top figure has a checkered past with the police after he had refused to give his urine sample after being arrested on a drug charge.
The state had later charged Hamid for his refusal to give a urine sample and he was sentenced to serve 6 months in jail in relation to the charge. But subsequently, the high court had dismissed the charges against Hamid.
While many had voiced concerns over his possible appointment on the Police Board, former Chief Judge at the Criminal Court Ahmed Hailam had been vocal in his opposition to the appointment.
He had said that it is a joke to the whole institution that a person who had been detained by the Police is appointed on its Board in order to reform the organizations.
