Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed says Maldives Police Services have elevated the ‘Operational Status’ of the police service to ‘Level 2’ as the COVID-19 pandemic worsens in the country, especially in the Greater Male' Area.

In a tweet, CP Hameed said that he had appointed an Assistant Commissioner to lead a renewed effort to effectively police the new COVID-19 preventive measures declared by Health Protection Agency HPA.

He also said that help mitigating the current surge in COVID-19 infections will be the top operational priority for all for the Police force for the next one month.

This comes after Public Health officials warned that Maldives is currently experiencing its worst COVID-19 wave since the pandemic hit the island nation early last year.

Health Protection Agency HPA yesterday had banned vehicular activity in the Greater Male' Area from 6 pm to 6 am every day as the COVID-19 infect trend in the area kept going up.

In the past 7 days, 758 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Greater Male' Area alone as the total number of COVID cases reported in the country hit 17,507 yesterday.

HPA had said that there are 2,302 active cases of COVID-19 in the country and that 206 COVID-19 patients are currently hospitalized for further treatment.
