Health Protection Agency HPA has imposed a vehicular ban in the Greater Male' Area starting tomorrow from 08:30 pm to 04:30 am to deter the number of COVID-19 infections in the capital city.
In an announcement, HPA said that in addition to the vehicular ban, it had also extended the curfew hours from 11:00 pm to 04:30 am for the next two weeks.
HPA added that the vehicular ban would also be in force for the next two weeks and would be revised at the end of that period.
Health Protection Agency also said in its notice that all group sports and exercise activities should now be stopped to further deter the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It said that the agency would allow individual exercise activities and that it advised patrons to cease visits to public parks.
Additionally, HPA said that universities have been instructed to cease physical classes to its students and is expected to hold online university classes for its students.
The restrictive measures follow an upward trend of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives in recent weeks as more than 200 people tested positive for the illness yesterday alone
. Authorities now believe that the Maldives might now be dealing with a new variant of the COVID-19 cases as the rate of infection has skyrocketed in recent weeks.
