The state has pressed 7 charges relating to sexual abuse and assault against the former Tourism Minister Ali Waheed who was sacked from his post amid allegations against him.
State Prosecutor’s Office said that it had forwarded the 7 charges pressed against the disgraced former Minister to the criminal court today.
It said that these charges include inflicting a sexual injury, attempt to rape, and indecent exposure under section 132 of the Penal Code.
It noted that the other charges filed against the former Minister include sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, and two counts of unlawful sexual contact.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had fired Ali Waheed after a group of female staff working at the Ministry had shared their complaints with the President and the Gender Minister earlier this year.
The President had requested Ali Waheed to resign from his post on his own but after he failed to adhere to the request, President Solih moved quickly to dismiss his then Tourism Minister for which many praised the President for his zero tolerance for sexual crimes even from a Minister from his cabinet.
