Health Emergency Operations Center HEOC has confirmed that Haa Dhaalu Atoll Kulhudhuffushi is currently experiencing local transmission of the COVID-19 pandemic and that explains the unrelated cases confirmed from the island city.

HEOC said contact tracing of previous COVID-19 cases reported earlier this month had revealed an additional four COVID-19 cases last Saturday.

It said that authorities were now taking extra measures to quell the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the island city.

HEOC said Health Protect Agency HPA’s Technical Advisory Group TAG team had a discussion with the island city’s COVID-19 task force and that the taskforce had now been briefed on the next steps to be taken.

It also said current data from the island city points to local transmission of the COVID-19 pandemic.

HEOC said that more would be revealed at its news briefing later tonight.

Kulhudhuffushi is currently under monitoring with 11 active cases of COVID-19 on the island.

This includes 8 individuals identified from contact tracing, 2 tested positive from random sampling, and 1 tested positive after presenting with symptoms.

Kulhudhuffushi is the second island to report local transmission of the COVID-19 pandemic recently with Gaafu Dhaalu Hoadehdhoo also reporting a local transmission last month.
