Immigration Maldives reports a 25 percent increase in tourist arrival into the country in September as the country looks to make up for lost time amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a tweet, Immigration said that in September a total of 9538 tourists arrived in the country and that this is a 25 percent increase in tourist arrival since the country reopened the borders in mid-July.

Immigration also reported that on average 318 tourists arrived per day last month while in August that number was at 218 and at 100 in July.

It also said that 696 tourist arrivals were recorded on a single day in September, the maximum to arrive on one day. These numbers were at 217 and 373 in July and August respectively.

Immigration said most of the tourists who visited the Maldives in September were from Russia with 2065 arriving in the country. This was followed by United Arab Emirates UAE with 1029 Emiratis visiting the Maldives last month.

The United States, the United Kingdom, and Spain completed the list of top five countries with most visitors to the Maldives.

The Immigration had also said that a total of 18867 tourists have arrived in the Maldives since the country opened its door for tourism back in July after a four-month shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tourist activities are expected to pick up later this month when guesthouses in the islands are reopened in mid-October. Authorities had said that guesthouses in the Greater Male’ Area would only be allowed to reopen sometime in November.
