Health Emergency Operations Center HEOC has confirmed another case of COVID-19 from the island city of Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi.
HEOC said the individual who had tested positive for COVID-19 is a direct contact of a crew on Faalhu Boat who had tested positive for the illness earlier.
HEOC reported the first case of COVID-19 from the island city on Friday after a captain of a sea vessel from the island had tested positive for COVID-19. Contact tracing of the positive individual had identified that two other crew from the same vessel have also been infected with the pandemic.
Health Protection Agency HPA had placed Kulhudhuffushi along with the neighboring Nolhivaram under monitoring. The latest update by HPA showed that the island city has currently 5 active cases of COVID-19 and that two of those individuals are showing symptoms of the global pandemic.
Nolhivaram is yet to report a case but the vessel in question is likely to have traveled to the island before or after traveling to Kulhudhuffushi.
Currently, 19 inhabited islands in the country are hosting active cases of COVID-19. Along with Kulhudhuffushi and Nolhuvaram, Gaafu Dhaalu Hoadehdhoo also remained under HPA monitoring.
HPA also said that the 23 resorts have active cases of COVID-19 at the moment and that this includes 12 tourists and 30 resort staff.
The global pandemic has claimed 1 million lives worldwide and here in the Maldives, 34 individuals have succumbed to the illness since April. This includes 28 locals and 6 foreigners.
HPA had also said that confirmed cases of COVID-19 include 7 deceased positives whose cause of death is not directly due to COVID-19.
