Police have arrested several participants from a vehicle rally organized by the opposition today in Male’.

Police had joined the participants at the starting point of the vehicle rally and had informed them that the event cannot be held. Police had also said that it would take action against those who disobey their calls.

Although it is yet unclear how many individuals were arrested from the scene, video footage shows at least 15 participants taken under custody.

Opposition supporters had resumed their vehicle rally on Majeedhee Magu despite the attempts by the police to disrupt the event.

SO police officers were later seen successfully dispersing the participants of the rally.

Several opposition leaders were seen at the vehicle rally include PNC leader Abdul Raheem Abdullah, former MP for Baarashu Constituency Ibrahim Shujau, and MP for Naifaru constituency Ahmed Shiyam.

Police had earlier issued a warning against mass gatherings and protests and have said that it would take action against those who disobey Health Protection Agency guidelines
