Police have arrested a man who attempted to smuggle narcotics to Shaviyani Atoll Foakaidhoo yesterday.
Police said in an operation carried out by the police station in Foakaidhoo, a 52-year-old local man was apprehended for attempting to smuggle narcotics to the island aboard a sea vessel.
Police said it initiated the operation after receiving a tip about the crime.
It also said that the suspect was arrested yesterday around 3:14 pm at Foakaidhoo harbor area. Police said its officers had halted the man and searched his persons and the package he was carrying. It said that police had found suspicious substance bound in rubber packets from the package in his possession.
Police also said Shaviyani Foakaidhoo Magistrate court had ordered that the suspect be remanded in custody for five more days for further investigation.
The police station in Foakaidhoo is still investigating the matter.
