The Maldives and United States have signed a framework for a defense agreement that looks to bolster the security relationship between the two countries.
The framework named ‘ Framework for US Department of Defense-Maldives Ministry of Defense, Defense and Security Relationship’ was signed by Minister of Defense Mariya Didi and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for South and Southeast Asia at the US Defense Department Reed Werner.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Maria said the framework would add immense value to the excellent partnership between the Maldives and United States, especially in the defense and security domain.
She stressed that the importance of bilateral dialogue and engagement, against a backdrop of growing threats such as piracy, violent extremism, terrorism, and illicit trafficking, to the peace and security of the Indo-Pacific and the Indian Ocean region, which is tied to the best interest of both nations.
Defense Ministry said that the framework outlines a range of bilateral activities, including senior-level dialogues, discussions, engagements, and opportunities in areas such as maritime domain awareness, natural disasters, and humanitarian relief operations.
It also said the framework is a positive step towards furthering the close ties that exist between the two countries, especially in the defense and security sectors of both countries.
