Health Emergency Operations Center HEOC has confirmed 2 new cases of COVID-19 from Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Hoadehdhoo as the local transmission in the island widens.
HEOC said that two 18-year-old men from the island tested positive for the pandemic today. It said they were contacts of previous COVID-19 cases.
The two new cases take the total number of positive cases reported in the island to 38.
Authorities have said that they are still in the process of assessing the extent of the community spread on the island but had said the initial contacts of the first few COVID-19 cases exceeded 100.
HEOC had said that Hoadehdhoo and the neighboring Madaveli still remained under monitoring as the threat of the community spread loomed over the islands. Although Madaveli is yet to report a case of COVID-19 it is connected to Hoadedhoo via a causeway and has caused HEOC to conduct random sampling in the island too.
A total of 8900 people has tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives since March while 6559 people have now recovered from the illness.
Authorities have confirmed that 31 individuals have succumbed to the pandemic in the country including 25 locals and 6 foreigners.
