Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih would notify him if and when he had to step down from his post after MDP leader and former President Mohamed Nasheed called on him to resign from his post.

Speaking to ‘The Press’ Minister Fayyaz said that President Solih would signal when he had to resign from his post as Economic Minister.

Earlier, Nasheed had sent a letter to MDP Chairperson Hassan Latheef saying he was insisting that Economic Minister Fayyaz, who is filling an MDP slot on the current coalition government, should resign from his post for the potential damages the Minister might bring to the party.

Without elaborating on the details of the said damages, Nasheed said he had no personal quarrels with any MDP member or any minister. But he called on the chairperson to make sure that his letter seen by as many MDP members and other citizens of the country.

Responding to the letter, Minister Fayyaz defiantly said that he too wished that many MDP members and others saw the letter from the former President.

In his letter, Nasheed went on to say that as President of the MDP, it is his not responsibility to determine whether or not Minister Fayyaz was corrupt but it is his duty to act in the best interest of the party. Nasheed said by calling the Minister to resign from his post, he believed Nasheed had fulfilled his responsibilities as party president.

Last week, President Nasheed had said on MDP National Assembly Watsapp group that he had acquired 30 signs to push out Minister Fayyaz and would propose the issue to the Assembly and President Ibrahim Solih once he has acquired 35 signs.

A motion of dismissal against a member of the cabinet can only be approved by parliament with votes from at least 44 MPs. But Speaker Nasheed is yet to garner enough support for his ‘manhunt’ against the Economic Minister and has yet to disclose why he was now so disapproving of the Minister.
