A seventy-nine year old elderly citizen has passed away on Tuesday morning, 1 September 2020, due to Covid-19 viral contagion.

Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) confirms the elderly citizen was provided with medical attention at the DH-11 Ward of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) at the time of their demise.

Moreover, the hospital confirms the patient passed away at 01:42hrs on early Tuesday morning.

The death increases the island nation's death toll with regards to the global viral pandemic to 29, which includes 23 locals and 6 expatriates.

On Monday evening, health authorities had reported 137 new positive cases of Covid-19 discovered within a 24-hour window. Out of the total reported on Monday, 129 were discovered from Greater Male' Region where the virus seems most active while the remaining 8 cases were found from across the atolls.

Meanwhile the total number of cases reported from Maldives have reached 7,804 while the total recoveries have surged as well. According to MInistry of Health a total of 5,155 individuals have since recovered from Covid-19 while active cases stood at 2,615.
