Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed that an elderly Maldivian man has died from COVID-19 today as the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients surpass 171.

In a tweet, HPA said that earlier this morning at 05: 11 am, a 73-year-old local man admitted at Hulhumale Medical Facility HMF has passed away from COVID-19.

He is the 11th person to die of COVID-19 this month and the 28th person die from the pandemic since April of this year in the Maldives.

Meanwhile, Health Operation Center HEOC Spokesperson Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq said last night that the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients have now increased to 171.

Speaking at the latest news briefing by the HEOC, Dr. Nazla said with the surge in positive cases the number of people being admitted for further treatment has also increased.

She noted that even though the current restrictive measures taken against the pandemic may prove difficult to follow, it is in the best interest of everyone to follow the guidelines to stop the spread of the pandemic.

Earlier this week, Dr. Nazla had said that 62 percent of the COVID-19 hospital beds in the greater Male’ Area are now occupied and that the situation is currently at alert level 2.

Authorities have banned vehicular activities from 8 pm to 5 am in the Greater Male’ Area while a curfew has been imposed from 10 pm to 5 am in the capital city. Also, it is now mandatory to wear facemasks in the public in the greater Male’ Area and any other islands with active cases of COVID-19.
