Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed an additional 119 new cases of COVID-19 as authorities warn that the current surge in cases would eventually overwhelm the country’s healthcare system.
In a tweet, HPA said that out of the 119 cases reported on Sunday, 110 were reported in the Greater Male’ Area while 9 were reported from the islands.
HPA also said that the new cases included 100 Maldivians, 11 Bangladeshis, 3 Indians, 2 Filipinos, 2 Emiratis, and 1 Sri Lankan.
The total number of new cases now stands at 6779.
Meanwhile, HPA confirmed that 109 individuals had recovered from the illness on Sunday and that a total of 4222 people have now recovered from COVID-19 here in the Maldives.
However, 2531 individuals remained as active cases of COVID-19 with 1457 under isolation and 162 hospitalized for further treatment.
The Pandemic remains rampant in the Greater Male’ Area as authorities look to further restrict the movement of people within the country’s capital with a ban on vehicular activities from 8 pm to 5 am and a 7-hour curfew for vehicles and pedestrians from 10 pm to 5 am.
The Maldives have recorded 26 COVID-19 deaths since April, 9 of them coming this month. The deceased include 20 Maldivians and 6 foreigners.
