Health Emergency Operations Center HEOC Consultant Dr. Sheena Moosa says at this rate the daily number of new cases of COVID-19 might hit 600 in the coming days.

Speaking on Raaje TV’s Khabaru Feetha program, Dr. Sheena said that the number of new cases of COVID-19 reported now are a small percentage of the actual cases in the country.

Dr. Sheena said as 40 percent of the COVID-19 patients in the Maldives are asymptomatic, they are infecting others without even being aware of their own infections. She said as a result by the time such a person is diagnosed, the person has infected several others unknowingly.

Dr. Sheena said the Health Protection Agency does not have the capacity to manage such a pandemic on its own and that it needs the help of other institutions and volunteers. She highlighted that dissolving the National Emergency Operations Center and replacing it with HEOC severely diminished the firepower to fight the pandemic in terms of resources.

Dr. Sheena said as the number of positive cases has increased substantially, the HPA is unable to handle contact tracing and other related issues on its own without help from outside.

She warned that at this rate more people are expected to die from the Pandemic and more will get infected in the coming days.

While HPA has reported 6660 cases of COVID-19 in the country, authorities are working around the clock to deter the rampant pandemic that has claimed 26 lives in the country, 9 of them in August alone.
