Education Ministry says all the schools in Male’ Area would remain closed for an additional two weeks following the surge in COVID-19 cases in the capital city.
In a tweet, the Ministry said that as per the recommendations from Health Protection Agency HPA and other relevant authorities, for the next two weeks from 23rd August to 3rd September schools in Male’ Area would only be holding online classes for all grades.
The Ministry also said that it would reevaluate the decision in two weeks.
Schools in Male’ City opened for grades 9 to 12 in July but closed down again after the rise in COVID-19 cases in the country. In a statement earlier this month, the Education Ministry said that the school environment plays a vital role in developing the students psychological and socials skills and but the ministry would always prioritize the health of the students.
The Ministry had added that with the spike in COVID-19 cases, the most important thing for the students now is to stay at home with their families.
HPA confirmed 170 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday alone with 139 Maldivians testing positive in a day. Out of the 170 cases, 169 were reported in the Male’ Area with only one case reported from the islands.
The country has now recorded 6079 new cases of COVID-19 although 3648 have now recovered from the illness in the country.
A total of 24 people has succumbed to the pandemic here in the Maldives including 19 locals and 5 foreigners.
