Health Emergency Operations Center Spokesperson Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq says police have fined 80 individuals in the last 24 hours for violating the 7-hour curfew currently implemented in the Greater Male’ Area.

Addressing the media, Dr. Nazla said in the last 24 hours police have cautioned 120 individuals for breaking the 10 pm to 5 am curfew in the Greater Male’ Area. She also said 80 individuals were fined for repeating the offense in the last 24 hours.

Dr. Nazla confirmed that a total of 311 individuals have been fined for violating the curfew imposed on the 4th of this month.

The Health Emergency Operations Center declared the 7-hour curfew in the Greater Male’ Area last week and ordered the complete halt of movement within the capital city between the hours of 10 pm and 5 am.

HEOC also said that takeaway and deliveries should also be stopped from 10 pm each night and that businesses should close around 9:30 pm to accommodate an effective curfew.

These strict measures were implemented as the country is currently experiencing a surge of new cases of COVID-19 with 597 cases reported in the last 5 days in the Maldives.
