Health Protection Agency HPA says 89 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the country yesterday as several new cases were reported from resorts as well.
In a tweet, HPA said that out of the 89 new cases, 83 were reported in the Greater Male’ Area and that 6 cases were confirmed from the islands including several resorts.
HPA also said that 58 Maldivians, 19 Bangladeshis, 6 Indians, 2 Sri Lankans, 2 British nationals, 1 American and 1 Egyptian tested positive for the pandemic in the country on Friday.
This takes the total number of COVID-19 patients in the country to 4769.
Meanwhile, HPA said that 29 individuals had recovered from the illness taking the total recovered to 2754.
But HPA confirmed that the number of active cases of COVID-19 has climbed to 1996 and that 129 remained hospitalized due to the illness.
After the recent surge in cases, authorities in the Maldives had ramped up the measures taken against the pandemic including imposing an 8-hour curfew in the Greater Male’ Area from 10 pm to 5 am every night. Authorities have also made it mandatory to wear masks in public in the Greater Male’ Area and any island that has active cases of COVID-19.
Currently, active cases have been reported in 12 islands and 7 resorts across the country.
The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed 19 lives in the Island Nation of the Maldives including 14 locals and 5 foreigners.
