Health Emergency Operations Center HEOC spokesperson Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq says another tourist who arrived in the Maldives has tested positive for COVID-19.
Speaking to reporters at the latest HEOC news briefing, Dr. Nazla said the tourist had tested positive on Tuesday and that the individual had traveled to OBLU Select At Sangeli. She added that the tourist still remains on the resort and that authorities are working to test the person’s family.
Dr. Nazla also said that contact tracing for the positive person is currently underway.
She noted that the individual tested positive before leaving the Maldives as per the guidelines set by the health officials here in the country.
This is the second tourist to test positive for COVID-19 since the Maldives reopened its borders in mid-July after the closure back in March.
On the 27th of July, an American who traveled to the country had tested positive for COVID-19.
The government allows foreigners from all nationalities and countries to travel to the Maldives and have also decided not to test the arriving tourists unless they show symptoms of the global pandemic.
The tourists arriving in the Maldives are only allowed to travel to the resorts to which they have made bookings and are not allowed to travel to the capital Male’ where the pandemic is rampant.
Yesterday HPA reported 148 new cases of COVID-19 in the country of which 146 were confirmed from the capital city while two were confirmed from the islands.
