Health Emergency Operations Center HEOC Spokesperson Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq says police have fined 52 individuals today for failing to wear masks in public in the greater Male’ area.
Updating the local media on the latest developments of the COVID-19 crisis, Dr.Nazla said that police had cautioned 272 individuals for failing to wear facemasks today. She said that police had fined 52 individuals after being cautioned once of their offense.
Following the alarming rise in COVID-19 cases, authorities had made wearing masks in public mandatory in the public with police enforcing the order from Saturday.
Dr. Nazla said that since Saturday police have cautioned 645 individuals for failing to wear masks while 73 individuals have been fined for disobeying this mandatory order.
Authorities have confirmed that in the last 48 hours 344 individuals have tested positive for COVID-19 in the country.
Noting that yesterday a record of 215 tested positive for the pandemic, Dr. Nazla urged the country to adhere to the guidelines set by the authorities to quell the outbreak.
She also called on the public to share accurate and correct information with the authorities especially during contact tracing to help further track the spread of the infection.
