President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says it is not feasible to go into another lockdown as the country grapples with a surge in new cases of COVID-19.
In a tweet, President Solih noted that the number of positive cases is on the rise and to control the spread of the infection, the general public must wear facemasks went going outside.
He advised the public to adhere to the guidelines of the Health Protection Agency HPA and said the authorities require cooperation from all to deter the mass outbreak.
President Solih also indicated that going into another lockdown would not be a feasible measure to take.
His comments came as HPA reported a record of 215 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives yesterday.
This included 149 locals and 54 Bangladeshis. Health Protection Agency HPA has said that currently there are 1489 active cases of COVID-19 with 84 individuals hospitalized for further treatment.
The government had eased the lockdown measures it implemented in the country considerably last month with government offices and schools allowed to reopen as well as resuming communal prayers in the capital Male’ Cit.
The government had also reopened its borders in July following the closure back in March.
