Health Protection Agency HPA says a 52-year-old local woman has died of COVID-19 last night at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital IGMH.

In a tweet, HPA said the woman was brought to the hospital’s ER yesterday around 04:40 pm and had passed away at 11:20 pm last night.

She is the 17th person to die of COVID-19 in the country and the second to die of the illness in the last 5 days after being brought to IGMH ER having complained of breathing difficulties.

Last Thursday a 71-year-old local woman passed away after she was admitted to IGMH ER after coming in with breathing difficulties.

The 17 people who have died of COVID-19 in the Maldives include 12 locals and 5 foreigners. HPA has confirmed out of the 17 locals who have died of COVID-19, 7 were women and 5 local men have also died of COVID-19.

With the surge in new cases of the pandemic in the country in the last few days, the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients has also skyrocketed with 72 currently being treated at hospital facilities in the country.
