Police have used pepper spray to disperse demonstrators as the opposition coalition held protests in Male’ for the second time this week.

The demonstrators belonging to PPM and PNC had gathered at the junction between Majeedhee Magu and Chandhanee Magu to protest against the current government and its policies.

The protestors called for the resignation of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih while also calling for an independent judiciary and the release of former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

The protestors also voiced concerns over the Indian ruling party BJP and denounced its hold on the current government.

While the police had allowed the media unhindered access to the protests, leaders from the opposition were also present at the protests.

Police used pepper spray to control the crowd when protesters broke police ranks and headed east on Majeedhee Magu after law enforcement officers tried to arrest PNC council member Ahmed Nareesh.

The opposition had also organized a protest on Sunday night.
