Maldives Police Service on Tuesday urged the public to strictly adhere to social distancing guidelines and to wear masks at all times while gathering for protests or rallies.
Local law enforcement's advisory comes amid Maldives opposition coalition's announcement of a protest in Chaandhanee Magu, slated for Tuesday evening.
Police further reports the public disregard to Health Protection Agency's (HPA) guidelines and its advisory against public protests and gatherings; that have been restricted until 7 August. Although authorities have advised against such conduct, many are breaching protocols while gathering in high-contact clusters without wearning masks or adhering to social distancing.
Moreover, local police made emphasis on the abrupt surge in positive cases corresponding with lift off on lockdown measures. The authority notes upward trend in positive cases, adding several of the authority's officers working in the frontline towards Covid-19 related efforts were getting infected as well.
Maldives Police advises the public to obey guidelines from health authorities and minimize outside movement.
Meanwhile, authorities have recommended media personnel to practice same social distancing protocols and wear masks at all times during media coverage and correspondence.
