The Prosecutor General’s Office says it has no plans to file legal charges against those who violated the lockdown implemented in Male’ Area to deter the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

PG Office said that it had withdrawn all cases pertaining to lockdown violation currently submitted to the courts and would not be filing charges for other cases.

It also said that the PG Office has instructed state institutions to retrieve the lockdown fines owed to the state.

PG office said that it decided not to pursue legal claims against those who violated the lockdown to make sure that all are treated equally if legal action is to be taken against such offenders.

It said that some had violated the lockdown as a last resort during emergencies and found it unnecessary to produce a criminal record under such circumstances, as it would be detrimental to the society.

The Police have requested the state prosecutors office to file charges against those who had violated the lockdown before and the PGO had filed such charges before too.
