State Electric Company Limited STELC says the electricity bills for the month of July is also expected to be high.

Speaking at a news conference, STELCO General Manager Hussain Fahmy, the company had conducted a survey in the Male’ Area after electricity bills for the month of May and June were higher than usual.

He said in the survey was conducted in almost 700 households in the capital city.

Fahmy said that the survey had shown that electricity consumption in the city still remained high and this would mean the bill for the month of July would also high.

He also said that STELCO staff had visited households who had complained of unusually high electricity bills but had not found any glitches in the meters.

He noted that several households had opened windows while having their ACs on and had other household devices on standby while not in use. He added that these would be a reason for the high electricity consumption in such households.

STELCO had urged its customers to economize their use of electricity by monitoring the electricity meters to gauge the usage. It also said that if the customer notices a spike in average electricity usage, then it would be easier to pinpoint the reason behind the spike.

Meanwhile, speaking at the same news conference Fenaka Corporation Deputy Director Ahmed Najaah said even though the company had applied a subsidy to the electricity bill for the last few months due to the COVID-19, it has no plans to apply a subsidy for the month of July.

He added that many customers are yet to pay their bills and the fines applied because of overdue bills would ultimately increase the newly issued bills.
