The national carrier, Maldivian has chartered its first repatriation flight from Gan International Airport in Addu City today.

It said that the flight departed to Bangladeshi capital Dhaka earlier today with 135 Bangladeshi national onboard.

This is the first time Maldivian has chartered a repatriation flight from an airport other than Velaana International Airport in Hulhule.

The Maldivian government has been regularly sending back expatriates living in the country since the COVID-19 crisis began earlier this year.

Official statistics show that it has helped more than 3000 migrant workers to go back to their countries last month alone.

The government had revealed recently that it aims to repatriate around 20,000 migrant workers back to their countries as the issue of undocumented expatriate workers has caused several other problems in the country.

Recently, the country saw a series of demonstrations from migrant workers mostly due to unpaid salaries from local employers and handlers.
