The Criminal Court has issued a travel ban against former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.
Earlier today, the criminal court rejected all 7 charges filed against the former VP by the state and paving the way for his release from police custody.
Clarifying the travel ban against Adeeb, police said while the court has rescinded the charges relating to the corruption and crimes committed through the MMPRC scandal, the police had formally requested the court to place a travel ban on the ex-VP, one of the main suspects behind the scandal.
Police also said that it made the request to give the state a chance to appeal the court’s decision and that the criminal court has now issued an order banning the former Vice President from traveling.
At a news conference yesterday, Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem confirmed that the authority was requesting a travel ban on the ex-VP to restrict him from traveling outside of Maldives capital; Male' City.
Shameem further clarifies that the Prosecutor General's Office will be placing the formal request shortly - in the coming days - while he assures the court will heed their request.
Shameem also noted that Adeeb had previously attempted to evade custody, adding the former VP holds previous criminal records as well.
