The opposition coalition has called on the government to clarify why it has said that it would take a further 8 months to complete the construction work of the housing flats being built under Hulhumale Phase II.

In a statement, the opposition coalition said that it has received several complaints from concerned citizens as a result of the false information the government is trying to circulate about the Hiya flats, a large-scale housing project initiated under former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

The coalition said following these complaints, the opposition leadership has visited the construction site of the flats and has inspected the work currently underway.

It said that upon the inspection, the opposition can rule out the reasons cited by the government for an 8-month delay for completion of the flats as a delay tactic with the reasons being unfounded.

The opposition called on the government to clarify and explain to the public why the completion work would take 8 months.

The opposition also claimed that the current government has failed to adhere to the schedule for the project and hence delayed establishing services from the state ‘s end. It said that if the plan by the former government had been followed that the flats would have been finished by July of 2019 and that owners would now be living in these flats.

The opposition also accused that what President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said about the flats and what Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam said about the issues did not correlate.

Last week at a press conference Housing Minister Aslam said that it would take a further 8 months for the government to hand over the flats to its owners and that it would take utility companies around 8 months to provide essential services to Hulhumale Phase II.

The 16 towers with 25-stories each would have around 6720 housing flats with ground floors designated for retail purposes. The two-room flats would be handed to the owners unfinished.
