Speaker of the Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed says the parliament can hold debates on anything that does not go against the principals of Islam and that MPs can talk about assassinating an MP while debating a motion.

He made these comments after MP for Kaashidhoo constituency Abdullah Jabir proposed a motion today calling to dissolve the Local Government Authority, City councils, Island Councils as well as Atoll Councils.

After the motion was included in the agenda for today’s session, several MPs from the ruling MDP voiced dissatisfaction saying that the move goes against the constitution and should be tabled for debate.

In response to the discussion on the issue, Speaker Nasheed said that the only topics that cannot be deliberated in the chamber would be the topic that goes against the principals of Islam.

He went onto say that MPs can talk about assassinating a fellow MP while debating a motion in the chambers.

Meanwhile, Vice Speaker of the Parliament Eva Abdullah said that every issue that divides opinion cannot be cast aside a violation of the constitution but the country must be governed a decentralized state.

Responding to the Speaker’s comments, several MDP MPs said that the decision to accept MP Jabir’s motion should be made via a vote.
