Maldivian authorities have repatriated 200 expatriates in their bid to reduce the number of migrant workers living in the country.

Maldives Immigration said that the 200 expatriates were Bangladeshi nationals living in the country and that the rescue flight carrying them home had departed today.

This is the first rescue flight scheduled this month.

Last month, Maldivian authorities scheduled flights on 13 days to repatriate migrants living in the country.

Official data shows that authorities have repatriated around 5000 migrant workers amid the Covid-19 crisis.

While national carrier Maldivian has been chartering rescue flights, other nations have also sent their own flights to evacuate their citizens from the Maldives.
