Maldives Immigration has apprehended 22 undocumented migrant workers under its program to reduce the number of illegal expatriates in the islands.
It said the Immigration in collaboration with Police and Island Council has initiated a program in a bid to reduce the number of illegal expatriates working in the islands and to also remove migrants that have disrupted the social harmony of the islands.
It said that Immigration had apprehended 22 undocumented migrant workers from Alifu Dhaalu Atoll Dhagethi, Kaafu Atoll Himmafushi, and Alif Dhaalu Maamigili.
The government began the legalization of undocumented migrant workers last September and has registered more than 10,000 illegal expatriates.
But the Economic Ministry had estimated that around 50,000 illegal migrant workers remained unregistered and the exact number of undocumented expatriates was difficult to finalize.
