The Gender Ministry says 397 people are currently seeking state shelter amid the COVID-19 crisis that has brought about social and economical upheavals.
In a news conference held by the NEOC permanent secretary at the Ministry, Zulfishan Abdullah Kamaaluddin said that the Ministry’s statistics show that 252 individuals have reported that they are unable to make rent for their housing and that the state had provided temporary housing for 112 of those individuals.
She also said that in collaboration with UNICEF, the Ministry has provided 553 care packages to families most in need. She noted that the ministry had provided a further 273 care packages to separate families and NGOs have arrived for 9 more care packages to those most affected by the crisis.
The Gender Ministry has been spearheading the relief efforts in the aftermath of the Covid-19 crisis that has brought the country’s economy to a halt.
A recent study of socio-economic aspects of Covid-19 in the Maldives showed that 1 in 10 surveyed lost all income. The study also showed that 1 in 10 surveyed may lose jobs in the next month and that 3 in 10 surveyed were on reduced salaries.
