President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says the Hiya flats built under Hulhumale’ Phase II look good on pictures but these flats are not suitable for individuals to live in.

Speaking to the media at a rare press conference, President Solih said 80 percent of the people who are awarded the flats would find them unacceptable.

He also said that most of the finishing work in the flats was almost completed and little remained unfinished.

He added that almost MVR 43 million would be spent on attaching doors and tiling the floors of the flats.

The President said that more than 23,000 people have applied for a flat from the Hiya project and each tower could house about 5,000 people.

He said the government wanted to bring changes to the structure and would be happy to arrange a tour for the journalists of the Hiya flats. President Solih said the flats looked good on picture, especially at sunset.

He said that each flat would cost around MVR 11,000 and lamented that the whole project did not make sense financially.
