Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem says that his office is investigating police officers and former Anti Corruption Commission ACC members who were close to former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.

Speaking on Raaje TV’s Falasuruhee program about the MMPRC scandal, PG Shameem said that around 6 people masterminded the whole scandal and that notably three individuals including former President Abdullah Yameen, former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb and former Director-General of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation MMPRC Abdullah Ziyath have been identified as the main conspirators behind the scandal.

But he said that the scandal was undetected not only because of the shrewdness of the trio but because they had help from state institutions. He said that several state officials and officials from state organizations played a massive role in the scandal and that they should take the responsibility.

He also said former members of the Anti Corruption Commission had known ties to the scandal and that they were now being investigated. Shameem also said that authorities were looking into police officers that had ties to the former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.

The MMPRC scandal rocked the nation as millions of state funds were swindled under the name of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Company that promoted Maldivian tourism in the global community.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had vowed to investigate the MMPRC scandal when he first took office as the President and had formed a commission to further expedite the investigations into the cases of corruption and fraud. But MPs from ruling party MDP have lately voiced concern over the inaction of the commission.
