Health Protection Agency HPA reports 34 new cases of Covid-19 in the Maldives as the government's first phase of lockdown ease went into effect earlier today.

In a twee, HPA said 12 Maldivians, 21 Bangladeshis, and an Indian national tested positive for Covid-19 today.

This takes the total number of Covid-19 cases in the Maldives to 1547.

Yesterday an eleven-day old baby tested positive for Covid-19, making the infant the youngest person to test positive for the viral infection in the country. Also yesterday, an 89-year-old woman was tested positive for Covid-19, making her the oldest person to contract the virus in the Maldives.

Authorities have confirmed that 242 people have recovered from this illness in the Maldives.

The Island national has recorded five Covid-19 related deaths int he past two months. This includes an-83-year-old local woman, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi man, an 80-year-old local man, an 88-year-old Maldivian male, and a 45-year-old Bangladeshi man.

The government had taken several restrictive measures to quell the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country especially the capital city with the Male' Area under lockdown since the 15th of April. But earlier this week, the government announced that it would ease some of the restrictive measures taken against Covid-19 and these went into effect today.
