National Emergency Operations NEOC Consultant Dr. Sheena Moosa says 75 percent of the migrants tested for Covid-19 antibodies have all contracted the virus and recovered from the illness.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Sheena clarified that this was revealed by a research study.

She said most of the migrants tested for the Covid-19 antibody had the antibodies in their bloodstreams and that 75 percent of the tested migrants had these antibodies.

She explained that it was highly unlikely that the infection would spread through these individuals.

The Technical Advisory Group TAG team administered the research to see if there were individuals who had been infected and had recovered from the virus within the vast migrant community. This serology tests were first conducted in congested migrant living quarters.

While the world is yet to develop a vaccine for the highly contagious Covid-19 virus, developed nations are using antibodies from recovered patients to develop a vaccine.

The Covid-19 serology test is designed in a way that reveals whether the tested individual had the SAS-COV2 virus and if the person contained antibodies in his/her bloodstream.

Cells in the bodies secrete antibodies to ward off foreign bodies such as viruses and is a natural defense mechanism that is the cornerstone of the body’s immune system.
