Foreign Ministry says the government has repatriated over 800 undocumented migrant workers from Bangladesh this past month.
The Ministry said starting from the 21st of last month the government had repatriated 840 Bangladeshis without valid documents back to their country.
The government had chartered a flight from national carrier Maldivian today to transport some 352 Bangladeshis back to the country. This flight was initially scheduled for last week but was canceled due to Typhoon Amphaan that had wreaked havoc in parts of Bangladesh and India.
The Government sent back 68 Bangladeshis via a Bangladeshi Military aircraft on the 21st of last month and chartered a Biman flight to transport an additional 353 migrant workers on the 16th of this month.
Another Military aircraft of the country carried 67 migrant workers while 352 Bangladeshis traveled back today.
The Government aims to repatriate some 1500 migrant workers from Bangladesh as health experts have identified expatriate workers as the most vulnerable to the Covid-19 global pandemic widespread in the country, especially the Male’ Area.
The latest data from the Health Ministry showed that more than 622 Bangladeshis have tested positive for Covid-19 in the Maldives. This is 51.15 percent of the total number of positive cases in the country.
